Back for more!!! 2009

I have taken a break. I can send greetings from "Hans". I started him this weekend. He fired up with no problem. Thursday I will do a high fire (glaze).

In the 80's there where several artists that I was inspired by and recently I have found that I am studying their use of color and shape. In 2000 I started this journey of exploring the endless shapes that I can make with clay. The challenge of making the shape flat, round, even, interesting, balanced and of course my own. Patience has a lot to do with the process. The longer you wait for the clay shape to dry.. the truer it is. Makes sense. but sometimes time is not something you have. Would you believe that a potter actually uses a microwave to speed up the drying process.
During the past months I have been able to visit NYC. At the Met, I saw the modern art collection and the amazing Calder jewelry exhibit.
What I am searching for now is how color can enhance the shape or how the shape can enhance the color. Here are some artists that intrigue me: Rothko, Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Sylvia Mangold, Donald Sultan. So can you guess which artists I was inspired by for the two works in the photos. My friends, who own them can not answer.

The carport.... yes This is where I create, make and fire all the pottery. It consists of a worktable, slabroller, kiln, drying and storage cabinet. The seasons dictate when I can work. Timing is everything. Spring and Fall is the best time to work outside. Summer months it is to hot and then the clay melts. In the winter the clay can freeze, plus when you work with cold clay your fingers become icickles.
