Fired a kiln over the weekend... Again Hans was a champ.. Since it is still cold outside I have to be careful not fire him when it is cold outside. Here are three pieces that I fired. This is my first kiln opening for 2009.
Set of 4 salad plates/appetizer plates. I am attracted to the shapes that compliment each other. Here I have the rectangular dish with an organic design. I have changed my 3 dots (one large and two small)... In the early days the artist, Donald Sultan, worked with very strong linear shapes. He then chose more organic forms, mostly fruits, lemon and pears. I am inspired by his work. I prefer his earlier work, sailboats, office buildings and smoke stacks.
This is a large serving platter. This shape is a great canvas for glazing. This design is not my usual dots and lines. I chose two green rectangles connected by a yellow and orange rectangle. Color is very important to make each piece unique. The base is Lido Satin a beautiful soft white. T
This is the design that got this started. You can see that it is started from my dot and lines theme. It just worked out that way. You can see that it appears like a flag. I just like the position and design quality.
The glazes I used are moonscape and pepper stone base. These glazes take on a great patina when you keep using it.
Thanks for reading my blog

The carport.... yes This is where I create, make and fire all the pottery. It consists of a worktable, slabroller, kiln, drying and storage cabinet. The seasons dictate when I can work. Timing is everything. Spring and Fall is the best time to work outside. Summer months it is to hot and then the clay melts. In the winter the clay can freeze, plus when you work with cold clay your fingers become icickles.
