January 2016 brought out the creativity in me!!

Happy New Year!!  I recently rediscovered an old favorite clay  "Star" Clay form Star, N.C.  The Clay Studios at the Cary Arts Center provide a wonderful selection of clay bodies and this is one of them.  This high grog clay body is not easy to work with but the results are wonderful. The results are earthy, smooth and light weight. Here are two photos of work that I just finished. To enhance the beauty of the clay body I allow the clay to guide the shape. It becomes a dance and a beautiful shape appears. The earthy glazes are all high fire and food safe: Pippin Green and Iron Red with Copperhead.

Studio

The carport.... yes This is where I create, make and fire all the pottery. It consists of a worktable, slabroller, kiln, drying and storage cabinet. The seasons dictate when I can work. Timing is everything. Spring and Fall is the best time to work outside. Summer months it is to hot and then the clay melts. In the winter the clay can freeze, plus when you work with cold clay your fingers become icickles.
